Pinkii has forgotten what it is to smile

Dear Julia,

Pinki is barely 10 years old, but she does not smile or giggle like other kids of her age.  She is a 3rd grader who does not participate in school sports and social programs.  Tuberculosis has already taken a heavy toll on her.

Pinki’s father, Ajay, is unemployed and her mother is a housewife. She was born in the village of Madhopatti Tedhwa in the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.

Pinki has a mild demeanor and a voice that betrays the pain inside. She has just started receiving treatment at the JSM Clinic during the month of December 2011.

Ram Charan hopes to escape the fate of his father

Dear Jennie,

Fifty year old Ram Charan Chauhan hails from the village of Jamua in the district of Jaunpur   in eastern Uttar Pradesh.  His father, Chekuri, died of Tuberculosis.

Ram Charan works as a farm laborer and his wife is a housewife. They have 5 children, Kishor, Kamlesh, Kallu, Meena and Ashok.

Ram Charan developed Tuberculosis several years ago.  The attack started with persistent coughing and increasing weakness. It took him a long time to understand that he had contracted the same illness as his father. Thankfully, Ram Charan started receiving treatment for Tuberculosis at the JSM Clinic from December 2008.

Nagina is thankful that her hypertension is under control

Dear Kim,

Nagina Devi is only 45 years old.  She was born in the village of Sarava Bareri in the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.  Her husband Keshav Prasad is a small farmer and she is a housewife. They have three children, Poonam Devi, Kavita and Rekha.

Nagina developed acute hypertension soon after the birth of Poonam.  For a long period of time, she did not know the nature or the name of her illness until she walked into the JSM Clinic after hearing about it from her friends. She is now under treatment at the Clinic.

Chandrabali is thankful for his second lease of life

Dear Marty and Lorri,

Chandrabali Prajapati was born in December 1941 in the village of Gaura in the Jaunpur District of eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.  He is a farmer, and has two daughters.

Chandrabali had such a high sugar-level that when he was first brought to the JSM Clinic, his treatment had to be monitored for a few days before he could be sent back home.  He is now on daily insulin and has learned how to administer it himself. He has been under treatment at the Clinic since May 2007.

When asked about how is he doing, he folds both his hands in gratitude and tells that he has got a second life since he started receiving the treatment.

Basanti is now careful about her diet and exercise

Basanti Devi was born in February 1951 in the village of Kasnahi in the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.  She is a housewife.  Her husband, Bhaiya Ram, is a small farmer. They have two daughters.

She came to JSM Clinic for a camp for eye glasses.  During the eye examination it was discovered that she has been suffering with acute diabetes for a long time. She has been under treatment at the Clinic since May 2007.  She has been educated about the causes for developing Diabetes and how she should rearrange her life particularly about the diet and exercise.

Amina Bano’s diabetes is now under control

Amina Bano was born in October 1956  in the village of Belwa in the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.  She is a housewife.  Her husband, Munowar Ali, is a laborer working for $3.50 per day. They have three daughters and two sons.

Amina started feeling very week after she turned 50.  Her feet started swelling and eyesight started getting weaker. She was diagnosed with Diabetes at the JSM Clinic, and has been under treatment at the Clinic since July 2009.  She has been educated about the causes for developing Diabetes and how she should rearrange her life particularly about the diet and exercise.  When told about what she should eat in each meal, she gave a sad smile and said she eats whatever she manages to get on a particular day. She did promise to become more careful particularly about Indian sweet dishes.

Meet Vandana, the future Attorney

Vandana is a senior in the JS Girls’ Intermediate College in the village of Shiwpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.

Her father, Om Prakash comes from the nearby village of Bhanpur and makes sweets and sells them in the local market for living.  Her mother Champa Devi is a farm laborer who works long hours for $3.50 per day.  She lives in her simple home with her  parents and gandfather Harish Chandra, her grand mother Champa and her younger brother Kirti.

Her hobbies are to read books about the cultures of the world.  She wants to go to a Law School and become an Attorney eventually.

Gokul hopes to escape the fate that befell his father

Gokul Gautam is 65 years old.  He was born in the village of Kotwali Jagarnathpur in the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.  He is a farmer with very little land to make ends meet.  His pensive demeanor tells the story of his life. His wife helps him in the back breaking farm work.  They have three children: Kailash, Jiyalal and Shobhnath.

His father Ramsaran died early in his life.  Gokul now believes that his sudden death was from a heart attack.  He is very relieved that he will escape from the same fate.

Geeta’s been suffering from hypertension since a very young age

Thirty-seven year old Geeta Devi is a housewife. She was born in 1974 in the village of Gauhar in the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh in India. Her husband Phoolchand is a small businessman in the local town of Mariahu.  She works as a domestic maid, and washes dishes for living. They have four children: Sunil, Anil, Kavita and Komal.

Geeta started suffering with hypertension at an early age.   She has been under treatment at JSM Medical Clinic since July 2010.  She blames the persistent stress in her life for her hypertension.  Under an expert physician care and proper medications her blood pressure has been brought under control.
